Runways and lighting
KDLS has two asphalt runways that cross near the northwest corner of the field. Runway 13/31 is 5,097 by 100 feet and runway 7/25 is 4,647 by 100 feet. Both have medium-intensity edge lights, and runway 31 has runway end identifier lights. Key the mic on CTAF 123.0 to turn them on.
The airport is non-towered. Announce on 123.0. Displaced thresholds, obstacles, pattern altitude and traffic direction are in the Chart Supplement, which is the source to trust over any website, this one included.
IFR access
KDLS is the instrument airport for this stretch of the Gorge. It has two published approaches, the LDA/DME RWY 25 and the RNAV (GPS)-A, plus the DALLES ONE obstacle departure. The nearby fields at Hood River (4S2) and Goldendale (S20) have no published instrument approaches, so when the weather is down this is where you can get in. Seattle Center handles approach and departure.
Fuel and services
Hood Aero is the FBO on the field. It lists self-serve 100LL and Jet A, tie-down parking, a maintenance shop, aircraft rental, flight training and a courtesy car. Call 509-767-0005 to confirm hours and car availability before you count on them.
Wind in the Gorge
The Columbia River Gorge is a gap through the Cascades, and wind funnels through it. West wind is common and often strong and gusty on summer afternoons. East wind is more likely in the cold months. Having two runways helps, but check the crosswind for both before you commit, and expect mechanical turbulence off the surrounding hills when it blows.
Waterfowl are reported on and near the airport. The river is close.
